BPS & Our Families: Better Together

Breakthrough Public Schools believe that our families and communities are powerful partners in shaping how our scholars learn and develop. Therefore, we prioritize advocacy and relationship-building between schools and families. Families are the agents that inform our approach to ensure that our scholars achieve excellent outcomes.

The primary function of the Family Partnership Office is to provide a pathway whereby families and schools become allies in a manner that is liberatory and laden with trust. We assist schools and families in creating strong partnerships that deepen our commitment to academic priorities. We recognize that sharing power with families increases collaboration opportunities, resulting in excellent outcomes for scholars.

Teresa Kay Brown-Sayles

Director of Family Partnerships

A former middle-school teacher, turn-around principal, and Director of Instruction, Teresa says that her passion for teaching began when she was four. She comes to Breakthrough Public Schools with a Master's degree in Education specializing in Organizational Leadership and over 20 years of urban educational experience spanning private, charter, and public school districts. Among her most notable accomplishments are out-performing the suburban districts on the 3rd grade Ohio State assessments in math and reading as the founding principal during the school's first year of inception. Teresa finds her newest role as Director of Family Partnerships to be the next step in her career. It allows her to continue sharing space and time with families and utilize her skillsets to empower parents to become allies with teachers. When they do, scholars benefit the most! When asked what excites her most about this new role at BPS, she responded, "I am a native of Cleveland; I finally get to work with the kids and families in my hometown. I want to create opportunities for families and scholars to access high-quality educational experiences, ultimately leading them to live choice-filled lives!" Teresa has three adult children and five grandchildren who are the joy of her existence!

The Director of Family Partnerships provides network-wide leadership to enhance parent voice and support culturally responsive, equitable, and effective family partnerships at all Breakthrough schools. The ultimate goals are to improve the family experience, engagement, and satisfaction and contribute to scholars' academic success. As Director, Teresa collaborates with school and network staff to develop and implement family-friendly environments, practices, and policies. In addition, she coordinates innovative family outreach programming in conjunction with the Network Academic Team. These provisions include supporting families that experience homelessness and include facilitation of restorative justice between families and schools in need of conflict resolution.
