Weekly Family Update

September 22, 2019

Greetings CLA-EAST Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed their week. I’d like to give a HUGE shout out to all the fathers and father figures who attended the annual Father’s Walk. This year we set a record with near 200 men attending the event. Each father/father figure was asked to write an inspiring note or message to their scholar and send them to me. We are creating a book titled, Letters from Daddy. There is still time to submit your letter. You can do so by email to rfranklin@citizensleadership.org or texting to 216-645-7874. Our goal is to have the book ready to print October 4^th.

This week we took a cultural step-back to reset, re-establish and realign several school norms. Things such as hallway transitions, voice level expectations, restroom usage, and others, were in need of a revisit. Our aim was to allow maximum learning time inside all of our classrooms because we believe Education is Urgent! There was a lot of progress in the right direction but we still have room to grow. Things you can expect next week if your scholars is in need are:

VIP Lunch (for being late to class, out of uniform, being removed from class, etc.)
Accountability phone calls (scholars will be making phone calls home to report their on their own behavior)
After-school restorative circles (for scholars who have harmed the learning environment

As we move in to the month of October, we will be introducing our Bully-Awareness campaign. During crew our scholars and staff will be discussing the effects of bullying, how bullying has affected our school, and create individualized plans to stop bullying and harassment. They will also be taking a Bully-Awareness march. We invite all families to get involved. Contact Mr. Thompson at berry.thompson@citizensleadership.org

PowerSchool is working! Progress reports went home with all 6^th grade scholars. 7^th and 8^th grade scholars did not receive one due to formatting issues. They will be sent home Monday. For all families please, long-in to your parent access for your scholars PowerSchool account.

Cheerleading conditioning and tryouts will start next week. Conditioning will be September 23^rd – 26^{th 4:00} pm – 5:00 pm. Tryouts will be held on October 2^nd and 3^rd from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

Lastly, 8th Grade Families! The annual Breakthrough Schools High School Fair is being held on Wednesday, September 25; 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Citizens Leadership Academy East. This is a mandatory event for our 8^th grade scholars and their families, as we help guide them to the best, most appropriate high schools after graduation.

Curriculum Updates
	6^TH GRADE	7^TH GRADE	8^TH GRADE
MATH	Scholars will continue on their unit on ratios. They will work on identifying and creating equivalent ratios both in practice with numbers and with applying it in the real world sense by doubling and tripling recipes.	Scholars will continue their work on proportional relationships. Scholars will being to use equations and graphs to represent proportions and will be able to create stories to explain them in real-world ways.	Scholars will continue learning about Dilations and how to perform Dilations. They will have a QUIZ on Thursday and then begin learning about Similarity.
SCIENCE	Scholars will expand on their discussion on the types of rocks and how they interact in the rock cycle. They will learn about how layers of sediment build up to form sedimentary rock and then conduct a lab to observe simulation of the rock cycle in real time. They will finish up the week solidifying their understanding of the rock cycle with creative projects.	Scholars will experiment and learn how to write a lab report based on their experiment results.	Scholars will continue their new unit this week while reviewing friction and drag.
ENGLISH	Scholars will be continuing their short story unit. They will read two or more stories, focusing specifically on theme and how the authors develop the themes of each text. Scholars will be finishing their reading of All American Boys and beginning to work on their writing skills as they apply them to highly constructed paragraphs.
SOCIAL STUDIES	Scholars will continue their unit on Afghanistan. They will be exploring the affects hat the War on Terror had on the people of Afghanistan, while also looking at the history/culture of Afghanistan. Women’s rights will a big theme this week as they examine the issues that continue to plague Afghanistan.	Scholars will be preparing for their UNIT QUIZ about Ancient Rome on Wednesday. The remainder of the week will be spent reflecting on the school’s culture and ways we all can improve.	Scholars will start the week by learning how a bill becomes a law. This will lead in to their first QUIZ on Reconstruction on Wednesday. After the quiz scholars will take a deep dive in to the economic and education conditions for newly freed slaves.
