Ready Set Go: Summer Week 5

Hello families!

Last week I attended the National Family Engagement Conference here in Cleveland. One of the interesting discussions I attended was about how parent engagement can help to build a life-long love of reading by parents/guardians helping their child to improve their comprehension of what they read.

I thought I would share with you some of the suggested ways we as parent/guardians can be engaged in our child’s reading, improve their comprehension, and love of reading (By the way I hope you have enjoyed the list of book recommendations so far!).

The simple thing to do is ask questions. This shows our children that we are interested in what they are reading. You have to ask at a good time. You don’t want to be interrupted during the 4th quarter of the Superbowl to explain the game of football and your child may not want to be interrupted during their reading to explain the book.

A good time to ask may be in the morning while you are getting ready for school or at night on your way home from school. Some ideas of what to ask:

  1. Where does the story take place?
  2. What’s your favorite part of the story?
  3. What do you like about the main character?
  4. What about the main character is most like you? Which character is most like you?

I hope this sparks a conversation between you and your student and a love of reading.
