STEM Day at Woodland Hills
As the end of the school year draws to a close our staff at Woodland Hills are still hard at work inspiring our scholars! They recently sparked curiosity and joy through hosting a STEM Day. Each scholar received a STEM booklet. In the booklet, they were able to draw and make predictions about what would happen during a series of organized experiments.
For the first experiment, scholars participated in a volcano experiment using vinegar, baking soda, and food coloring. Scholars helped measure out ingredients and pour them into the volcano. After, each scholar was given their own bowl where they selected the colors they wanted to see. The scholars loved seeing the different color combinations they created.
During the next experiment, rainbow milk – food coloring, milk, and dish soap was used to create colorful swirls in a tin. Scholars were able to compare and contrast whether gel coloring or liquid coloring worked better. They completed the experiment with gel first and saw that the gel didn’t work very well. However, when they added liquid coloring the colors were very reactive to the dish soap.
Next, teachers assisted scholars with making sidewalk chalk paint. Scholars had a great time measuring the ingredients, mixing them, and picking food coloring to create different paint colors. The paint was used at recess and the kids had so much fun using all the different colors to create art.
Finally, we did a soda explosion experiment. Students were able to predict what would happen when you mix Mentos and Diet Coke. The results were not only fun, but also attracted a lot of scholars to observe what would happen. It was a lot of fun to see our students so engaged in all of the activities.
Woodland Hills’ recent STEM Day was a huge success, showcasing our commitment to inspiring scholars through engaging and educational activities. From creating colorful volcanic eruptions to experimenting with rainbow milk swirls and crafting sidewalk chalk paint, each experiment captivated our students’ curiosity and enthusiasm.
The joy and learning extended beyond the classroom as scholars eagerly explored scientific principles and made predictions, fostering a deeper understanding of STEM concepts. As the school year draws to a close, we are proud of our staff’s dedication to nurturing a passion for learning and discovery among our students, ensuring they are well-prepared for future academic challenges. This is just one example of how we’re working together to center joy in learning throughout our daily classroom experiences.
