Ready Set Go: 2021 Week 4
Hello Breakthrough family!
Last week we talked about the benefits of exercise for children and their growing brains. This week let’s talk about another way we can help children get ready for school. The hot days we have had are a great time to cool off at your local public library. In addition to having a variety of books available for every age and reading level the library also offers a variety of activities and services that children and families can participate in over the summer.
At the Cleveland Public Library scholars can participate in the Summer Lit League – A World of What-Ifs. Summer Lit League is an eight-week program that challenges children and adults alike to read for a chance to win prizes. The summer reading initiative runs from June 7th - July 31 and registration is still open. There are also tutoring sessions, a kindergarten readiness program, and online storytime. Check out all of the events and services that the Cleveland Public Library offers at www.cpl.org.
The Cuyahoga County Public Library also offers a summer reading program called Tales and Tails. The program runs from June 5th - August 15th. Participants in the summer reading program track their reading to earn midpoint and completion prizes, and grand prize raffle entries. Registration is open on the library website. The county library also offers Summer Fun which is a program that is designed to beat the summer slide and get a running start into the next school year while making learning fun. The program includes free STEAM learning activities, lunches, and the library reading program. The library is also offering free mentoring by appointment for students in grades 1-6 who are at risk of falling behind after a year of interrupted learning, or who simply need some extra help going into the new school year. Mentors are available in-person and virtually to help students with math, science, language arts and other subjects. Visit the library website at https://www.cuyahogalibrary.org/ for more information on the events and services offered.

Summer Reading Ideas Week 4
Here are some recommended age-appropriate books for summer reading. These are not mandatory at all, we just wanted to share some summer reading ideas if you are looking for them for your child.
K - 2nd Grade
Diary of a Worm
by Doreen CroninÂ
Doreen Cronin has done it again with this first person narrative told from the point of view of a boy worm. This book introduces the concept of a diary in a fun way. Young readers will identify with all the escapades of a worm, as he interacts with family members, goes to school and vacations at Compost Island. Children will laugh and learn facts in a fun way while learning to appreciate living creatures.
3rd - 5th Grade
El Deafo
by Cece Bell
Cece Bell lost her hearing at age 4. Now, she wears a hearing aid. The device is big and awkward and it makes fitting in at school difficult. But once she discovers that it lets her hear things others can’t, such as the teacher talking in the next room, she finds a way to fit in with her classmates: by becoming El Deafo, a Listener for All! This sweet and funny memoir, drawn comic-book style and based on the author’s life, is a story about being different and about turning challenges into superpowers.
6th - 8th Grade
The Five Ancestors series
by Jeff Stone
In this adventure series, we meet five foster brothers who were raised in a temple by warrior monks. When their temple is destroyed by one of their former brothers, the grandmaster orders them to uncover the secrets of their past. Now, each brother must use his skills and training to discover his own destiny and the truth behind their betrayal. Young martial arts fans will love the kung-fu-filled action in this fast-paced series, which nicely balances fighting with slapstick humor. When the boys split up, each book in the series follows a different brother’s adventures. A great series that is sure to lure kids away from video games.
