Weekly Family Update

September 30, 2019

Greetings CLA-EAST Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. As the Cleveland Browns got back to the basics to find a win, so did we at the school. Last week we took a step back to reset several cultural norms and expectations. The step-back was successful and we saw many great things take place that makes us feel good about the upcoming weeks. This week we will follow much of what we began last week. As a reminder, our aim is to allow maximum learning time inside all of our classrooms because we believe Education is Urgent! Things you can expect this week if your scholars is in need are:

Reflection assignments (for being late to class, out of uniform, being removed from class, etc.)
Accountability phone calls (scholars will be making phone calls home to report their on their own behavior)
After-school restorative circles (for scholars who have harmed the learning environment

As we move in to the month of October, we will be introducing our Bully-Awareness campaign. During crew our scholars and staff will be discussing the effects of bullying, how bullying has affected our school, and create individualized plans to stop bullying and harassment. They will also be taking a Bully-Awareness march. We invite all families to get involved. Contact Mr. Thompson at berry.thompson@citizensleadership.org

It is time to sign-up for your scholar’s fall student-led conference. (SIGN-UP HERE) Student led-conference is an opportunity for your scholar to sit down one on one with you and share their success from the first trimester. All families are asked to participate in student-led conference

Cheerleading tryouts will be held on October 2^nd and 3^rd from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

We were extremely happy to host the Breakthrough Schools Annual High School Fair. The CLA-EAST scholars did an amazing job engaging with many of the high schools present. The next step in the process is to begin scheduling your official shadow days with your schools of choice. Please be sure to call the schools main office to notify of the, time and school your scholar will shadow with.

Curriculum Updates
	6^TH GRADE	7^TH GRADE	8^TH GRADE
MATH	Scholars will continue on their unit on ratios. They will work on identifying and creating equivalent ratios both in practice with numbers and with applying it in the real world sense by doubling and tripling recipes.	Scholars will begin to use their knowledge of proportionality to create their own stories and create graphs, table, and equations based on those stories. They will be wrapping up the unit and having their Unit 2 Test next Tuesday.	Scholars will continue Unit 2 with Similarity and introducing slope. They are wrapping up Unit 2 and will have their Unit 2 Test next Wednesday.
SCIENCE	Scholars will review the rock cycle and prepare for their rock cycle quiz on Tuesday. They will then create their own short comic book, tracking a rock through the rock cycle. They will present their finished comic books at their student-led conferences.	Scholars will experiment and learn how to write a lab report based on their experiment results.	Scholars will deep dive into the different types of potential energy in preparation for their Unit 1 test next week.
ENGLISH	Scholars will be continuing their short story unit. They will read two or more stories, focusing specifically on theme and how the authors develop the themes of each text.	Scholars will continue their short story unit. They will also spend time reviewing theme, characterization, and main idea in preparation for the first unit test on October 9^th.	Scholars will be wrapping up their All American Boys unit by engaging in discussion on police brutality, taking a unit test on the skills they covered while reading on Thursday, and will be introduced to the end of unit project Friday.
SOCIAL STUDIES	Scholars will start their unit on Ancient Civilizations. They will begin the week looking at early hunter gatherers, then start to examine what made humans settle into civilizations, and what makes those civilizations thrive.	Scholars will begin their comparative mythology unit. They will begin by taking a look at Greek and Roman mythology while being able to identify what criteria makes up a mythological story in comparison to other story types such as fables or fairy tales.	Scholars will continue their unit over Reconstruction. Scholars will analyze the changes brought to the South by Radical Republicans. Later in the week they will decipher arguments for and against the 14^th amendment.
