Academics the Breakthrough Way
Big Learning. Bright Futures.
At Breakthrough Public Schools, we believe every scholar—without exception—deserves access to rigorous, joyful, identity-affirming, student-centered learning.
That belief shapes what happens in our classrooms every day. We pair high expectations with high support, giving educators strong curriculum, meaningful student data, and a clear instructional vision while trusting them to build the relationships that bring learning to life.
Our goal is to create classrooms where scholars do the thinking, teachers have the tools to respond to their needs, and everyone keeps growing.
Our Shared Foundation
Our values aren't separate from academics. They shape how we teach, collaborate, and create learning environments where scholars can thrive.
We Center Joy.
We create classrooms where curiosity, discovery, and a love of learning have a place alongside rigorous academics.
we bring a growth mindset
Learning requires productive struggle—for scholars and educators. We embrace reflection, feedback, and continuous growth.
we remain committed
We stay focused on what scholars need and adjust our approach when something isn't working.
we cultivate belonging
Strong relationships matter. We create identity-affirming environments where scholars feel known, valued, and ready to participate.
we communicate openly & honestly
Clear communication strengthens relationships among educators, scholars, families, and school teams.
we set & support high expectations
Every scholar engages with grade-level learning. Our job is to provide the scaffolds, intervention, and encouragement that make ambitious learning accessible.
High-Quality Curriculum You Can Build From
English Language Arts
BPS uses Wit & Wisdom across K–8, with a 90-minute daily ELA block focused on reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking using grade-level texts.
Grades K–4 also receive dedicated phonics instruction through Fundations. Independent reading, iReady, small-group instruction, and targeted intervention provide additional opportunities to strengthen literacy skills.
Mathematics
Our Ready Math curriculum emphasizes conceptual understanding, problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and real-world application during a 75-minute daily math block.
Daily fluency practice, iReady, diagnostic data, and small-group instruction help teachers identify and respond to individual learning needs.
Science
With Amplify Science, scholars investigate, experiment, write, think, and solve real-world problems while developing scientific knowledge and habits of inquiry.
Social Studies
Through History Alive!, scholars engage with history, civics, culture, and identity through reading, writing, discussion, and the exploration of primary and secondary sources.
Beyond the Core
Students also participate in art, music, physical education, social-emotional learning, and health education. Innovation Lab opportunities currently give grades 5–8 at Midtown and Glenville opportunities to explore technology topics including coding, AI, and robotics, with expansion to all campuses planned by 2028.
Education That Grows With Your Child
A Breakthrough education grows with your child. As scholars build new skills, they also become more independent, take on bigger challenges, and learn to take ownership of their learning.
Every K–2 classroom includes co-teaching by licensed Math and ELA teachers. This creates additional opportunities for targeted instruction and small-group learning while scholars build critical foundational skills.
As academic content deepens, scholars transition into subject-specialized instruction.
Our middle school model allows educators to deepen their content-area focus while helping scholars develop the independence and academic habits they'll need in high school.
All Scholars Receive strong core instruction.
Every scholar received rigorous, grade-level teaching grounded in high-quality curriculum.
Some scholars receive targeted instruction.
Small-group instruction, intervention, additional practice, and acceleration blocks help scholars strengthen specific skills while remaining connected to grade-level learning.
A few scholars receive intensive support.
Scholars with significant needs may receive more individualized interventions, tutoring, or direct support from interventionists and specialists.
Our approach also includes specialized instruction and accommodations for scholars with IEPs, language development support for English Language Learners, and enrichment and deeper learning for advanced and gifted scholars.
The learning changes as scholars grow, but our approach stays the same: strong teaching, plenty of practice, and the right support at the right time.

How We Teach
No matter their grade, scholars have a daily routine designed to help them learn, practice, and grow.
Grade-Level
Learning for All
Every scholar engages with rigorous, grade-level content every day.
checks for understanding
Teachers continually gather evidence of learning and adjust instruction in real time.
student discussions
Scholars discuss, question, explain, and defend their thinking rather than simply receiving information.
clear learning
goals
Scholars understand what they're learning, what success looks like, and why their learning matters.
culturally relevant teaching
Instruction reflects and affirms student identities while helping scholars understand their communities and the wider world.
the results speak for themselves.
The result is a classroom where teachers guide the learning—but scholars do the majority of the thinking and reasoning.
data with a purpose
Assessment at BPS isn't simply about measuring learning. It helps educators decide what to do next.
Teachers draw from daily classwork, unit assessments, universal screeners, interim assessments, and state assessments to understand scholar progress.
Tools including iReady, M-Class Math, and DIBELS provide additional information about foundational skills and fluency.
That information helps teachers:
-
Adjust instruction
-
Plan targeted small groups
-
Identify intervention needs
-
Provide acceleration
-
Set goals with scholars
-
Communicate progress with families
