Weekly Family Updates 2/5/2018

Welcome to the month of February! There is so much to be excited for and I hope every family is able to join us for the various activities and events happen at our school. History is created by the life’s work of individuals and the legacy they leave behind whether good or bad. This is true for all avenues of history including Black History. During the month of February, schools all over have an increased focus on teaching about the positive influence of African-Americans throughout world history. At CLAE our scholars will research influential African-Americans but as a means to build their background knowledge for a much larger and in my opinion, more impactful presentation, the “My Life, My Dream, My Legacy” project. Be on the lookout for more details for this exciting project.

Academic Updates

This week in Math, your scholars are wrapping up a unit on geometry which includes an assessment on Tuesday and the completion of their geometric cities. Friday is Flashback Friday, where they will have fun reviewing units from early in the trimester.

 

In Social Studies, your scholars will take their end of the unit assessment on Ancient Civilizations Monday and Tuesday while transitioning to World Religions on Wednesday. This is an exciting unit and as a reminder, your scholars will have guest speakers from several religions. The expert speakers will come to the school to speak about the basic theory of that religion. On Friday, scholars will begin researching for their black history projects for social studies.

 

In Science, your scholars will be working on identifying animal adaptations which have them doing research in order to create posters highlighting native Ohio animals. A unit assessment will bring this week to a close in science class.

 

In ELA, they are continuing their work with figurative language and determining the meaning of words using textual evidence. The entire 6th grade has really enjoyed reading the novel Wonder and is currently half-way through the book. We are still looking for guest readers. Tutoring: all scholars have been invited to tutoring in both math and reading. The groupings were created to either help struggling scholars or enrich stronger scholars. Tutoring is Monday—Thursday, 4:00—4:45 pm. If you are not sure of your scholar’s tutoring assignment, please give the main office a call.

 

School Culture Updates

This week your scholars will be preparing to present their 2nd-trimester work to you at our Winter Student-Led Conferences. Conferences will be held on Wednesday, February 14th from 2pm—7pm and on Thursday, February 15th from 7am—11am. Sign up today by clicking here or by calling the school at 216-352-5900.

We are in need parent volunteers to help with this months Family Game Night sponsored by the PAC on Tuesday, February 20th from 5:00 pm—6:00pm. Volunteers will assist by leading one of the exciting games.

Lastly, parents are always welcome to join us for community meeting every Friday from 8:00am—9:00am in the gym. This Friday we will have a dynamic speaker giving their unique perspective on Black History. Hope to see you there.
