Weekly Family Update

Greetings CLA-EAST Families,

We had an amazing week as we completed our 5th Celebration of Learning here at CLA-EAST. Thank you for everyone who helped make this day possible. Our scholars were very excited and proud to showcase the work they’ve been doing in their classes.

NWEA testing is about 80% complete. There are still a number of scholars who are in need of making up their English or Math test. Once all scholars have been completed, my team and I will begin analyzing results and making the appropriate shifts in academic instruction to help increase our current levels of student growth and achievement.

January is Community Service Month. Scholars and staff are being challenged to complete 1000 hours of community service (collectively). Each grade level will have a day of service designated for just their students and as a school community; we will come together for our annual day of service. On January 20th, we will be partnering with the Salvation Army of East Cleveland for our MLK Day of Service. More details will be sent home closer to the day of service. Scholars and staff are challenged to collect service hours outside of school. volunteering at places like shelters, senior assisted living facilities, Cleveland Food Bank and the Ronald McDonald House are places some of our scholars have volunteered in the past. Simply arrange for you and your scholar to volunteer this month, complete the job assigned to you and have an authorized staff member sign your volunteer hour tracker (Below & link here). In order for us to meet our goal of 1000 service hours, each person would need to complete 4 ½ hours by January 31st. Each service job completed will be displayed on our positive vibes wall here at the school.

Tutoring is an integral part of the direct intervention for scholars who struggle to meet proficiency standards. Scholars who are currently failing Math or English are required to attend. Please check your scholar’s PowerSchool grades to determine if they are required to attend. The following dates are the remaining winter tutoring sessions: Jan.14, Jan.16, Jan.21, Jan.23, Jan.28, Jan.30, Feb.4, Feb.6

An 8th-grade parent meeting is scheduled for the following events are required for all scholars who plan to attend:

8th-grade end of year activities, Graduation, Jr. Prom and Washington DC Trip

– January 23rd at 5:00 pm in room 311

The cultural focus next week will be on attendance and self-discipline. In order for a scholar to be successful in school, they must first be present. We are counting on all of our families to continue the conversations at home regarding the importance of being at school daily. In the area of self-discipline, we will work on lessons from our school’s Habits of Leadership. There will be discussions all week on scholars “controlling their words and actions in all situations”. Scholars will also be rewarded for displaying self-discipline throughout the week.

Curriculum Updates
	6^TH GRADE	7^TH GRADE	8^TH GRADE
MATH	Scholars will continue with unit 4, dividing fractions. They will have a quiz/checkpoint on Tuesday.	Scholars will continue working on positive and negative rational numbers. They will be solving real-world problems about money and working on word problems, they have both addition and subtractions of positive and negative numbers.	Scholars will continue Function and how they are represented in a table, graphs or equations. They will then use their knowledge of linear relationships to learn about linear functions.
SCIENCE	Scholars will continue their atoms unit by converting the periodic table, atomic numbers and atomic mass.	Scholars will continue in their new unit on Weather and Climate; this week specifically they will be learning background information about the Atmosphere and its effects on Earth.	Scholars will continue working in their third unit on Life Science. They will begin with learning about the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction
ENGLISH	Scholars will continue to engage in a novel study of Bud, Not Buddy, with a focus on character development and the author’s use of language. Students will get to know Bud by looking at the challenges he faces and his response to those challenges.	Scholars will be continuing their study of poetry, music, and art from the Harlem Renaissance. They will analyze various figurative language techniques used in the poetry, as well as the artistic techniques of the Music and art.	Scholars will identify different characters’ perspectives and explain the effect this has on tone and continue reading the novel the Uprising.
SOCIAL STUDIES	Scholars will continue learning about Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. They will also start the process of writing informational essays about these religions.	Scholars will continue in their second week of studying the European Renaissance. Scholars will be identifying the important values of the Renaissance and will connect those values to specific historic renaissance figures, starting with Leonardo de Vinci.	Scholars will be introduced to Judaism and history of anti-Semitism. This will lead to their analysis over the downfall of the Weimar Republic and the rise of Hitler.
