Weekly Family Update

Greetings CLA-EAST Families!

Welcome to the month of March and the official kickoff to the testing season. Everyone has their view on standardized testing; some good and some not so good but the reality for our scholars is that it is a part of the current landscape of public education and something that we must all endure. Realizing the inescapable duty of administering state standardized assessments, our team of teachers and staff are committed to providing the best test prep to maximize our scholar potential to do well. We cannot do it alone and are calling on all of our families to help us. Here are several ways you can help; (1) engage in discussion with your scholars about the importance to testing and good attendance, (2) use the sample test questions and prompts (below) to practice with your scholar, (3) and volunteer at the school to conduct small groups (in class) with scholars. Please email me directly if you would like to volunteer with small groups.

The second trimester has officially come to a close. Trimester 2 report cards will be mailed home on Friday, March 8th. Scholars who have been identified as an honor student will receive an invitation to attend the Trimester 2 honors awards celebration for Friday, March 15th at 8:00 am during community meeting.

The month of March is Academic growth month. We will be celebrating all scholars who show an increase in their achievement during each week. Scholars will be in competition with themselves to show improvements of 5% or more each in their classes. By increasing their grades by a total of 20% or more by the end of the month our scholars can improve one whole letter grade or better! Each week scholars who meet the goal of 5% growth in a class will earn an opportunity for prizes.

After school tutoring and Saturday academy for select scholars is now in session. Saturday Academy is February 23 – April 27th from 9:00 am to 11:30 am, and afterschool tutoring is February 26 – April 25th from 3:45 – 4:30 (Tuesday/Thursday after school). The scholars who are invited have received letters to bring home.

Lastly, Re-enrollment is going on now. If you have not already done so, please take the time to complete your re-enrollment by logging in to your SchoolMint account or call the schools main office and speak with Ms. Scott.

I’m looking forward to another great week…let’s go TIGERS!

Testing Tip #1, for parents

Math:

  • Promote math fluency by asking your child math questions in everyday life, like fractions while baking, unit rate at the grocery store, and percentages for the tip at a restaurant.

Reading/Writing:

  • Your child will not become a better writer without writing! Use the 35 “at home” writing prompts for consistent, easy practice. Your child should write for at least 10 minutes without stopping. Set a timer and have your child type, if possible, as the essays on the state test must be typed. When done, review your child’s writing with him or her. Focus on strong explanations, precise vocabulary, and correct spelling/grammar.
