Family Communicable Illness Protocols SY23-24
In Summary
- For the 2023-2024 school year, we are still requiring families to report positive cases of COVID-19 and other communicable (contagious/infectious) illnesses and to follow their doctor’s orders regarding time to remain at home.
- Masks are not required on a daily basis (although they can be worn if preferred), and we will no longer be regularly supplying disposable masks or COVID-19 test kits.
- Families should use the 23-24 COVID-19 and Communicable Illness Reporting Form to report all communicable illnesses.
- Students who test positive for COVID will still be required to quarantine through Day 5, in accordance with the latest guidance from the CDC.
- Read below for a detailed message.
Breakthrough Families,
We hope you had a safe and healthy summer and are looking forward to a great school year!
As we kick off this new school year, we want to inform you of our plans and protocols for keeping our scholars and staff as healthy as possible as we all continue to learn what it means to live in a post-pandemic world. The protocols that follow are designed to mitigate against the spread of contagious illness at school and to help us respond appropriately when cases occur.
The Highlights
- Our COVID protocols from the past school year are no longer in effect. This means that masks are not required on a daily basis (although they can be worn if preferred). It also means that we will no longer be providing masks or COVID-19 test kits to scholars and staff.
- We are still requiring families to report positive cases of COVID-19 and other communicable (contagious/infectious) illnesses and to follow their doctor’s orders regarding time to remain at home.
- Families should use the 23-24 COVID-19 and Communicable Illness Reporting Form to report all communicable illnesses.
- Students who test positive for COVID will still be required to quarantine through Day 5, in accordance with the latest guidance from the CDC.

- If your scholar tests positive for another communicable illness, please report that diagnosis by completing this form or calling your school’s front office and then follow your doctor’s instructions regarding treatment and how long to keep your scholar home from school.
- Testing positive for COVID-19
We are still requiring scholars and staff to follow the latest guidance from the CDC regarding quarantining and masking following a positive test for COVID-19. Our protocols are as follows:
In the event that a cluster of communicable illnesses occurs in a given school community, we will continue to work closely with our school nurses, our partners at MetroHealth, and the Cleveland Department of Public Health to address any issues. If circumstances call for stronger mitigation measures, we will communicate directly with impacted families at that time.
Keeping our scholars and staff healthy is a collective effort, and we thank you in advance for your adherence to the above protocols! If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your School Leader.
With gratitude,Â
Megan Johnston
