Weekly Family Update

Greetings CLA-EAST Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and the first bit of frost of the winter. As temperatures drop it is important to remember that scholars are permitted to wear the following to keep warm; official CLAE-Education Is Urgent pull-over, any sweater or cardigan/long sleeve under-shirt or hoodie that is solid black/white/gray/purple. Also, outside coats and jackets are to not be worn inside the classrooms.

Tutoring will begin during trimester 2. All scholars who received a grade of “F” in either math or ELA will be required to attend tutoring during the second trimester. Tutoring will be offered twice per week for each content on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 3:45pm to 4:30pm. Students who are eligible for tutoring will receive notification from the school.

This week at CLAE is Random Acts of Kindness Week. All week long our school community will focus on doing something kind for someone else because it is the right thing to do. We are challenging all scholars and their families to fill up their RAK tracker. The goal is for everyone to do a minimum of 5 random acts of kindness during the week. During school and at home, students will be able to earn RAK points for the school. We encourage you to participate at home as well. The trimester 1 awards program will be Friday, November 15^th at their grade level community meeting (6^th-7:45am, 7^th-8:25am, 8^th-9:05am) Students who earned perfect attendance, high honors, honor roll and most improved will be recognized at community meeting. Scholars will receive notification of their award in their report card mailing.

Field work: 6^th grade – “Cartography” Play. Our 6^th graders will be attending a Cartography play next Friday (11/15) at the Ohio Theatre at the Playhouse Square. CARTOGRAPHY is a new play commissioned by Playhouse Square that explores the issue of migration. Five refugees from struggling countries discover what it means to leave home behind and begin a new life.

In effort to remove unnecessary classroom distractions, we are revisiting our cell phone collection policy. As students enter the building and prepare for crew, our Dean’s of Students will circulate to each of the crew classrooms to collect all scholars cell phones. Each crew is assigned an individual bin for cell phone collection. Once the phones are collected they are then locked inside a cabinet until the end of the day where they are returned to the crew’s for students to retrieve them before going home for the day.

Curriculum Updates
	6^TH GRADE	7^TH GRADE	8^TH GRADE
MATH	Scholars will continue on their unit on ratios. They will work on identifying and creating equivalent ratios both in practice with numbers and with applying it in the real world sense by doubling and tripling recipes.	Scholars will continue working in Unit 4 with a focus on relationships between numbers in word problems. Scholars will be able to find fractions or percent’s of numbers and they will be able to determine how and why they must compute that such way	Scholars will be wrapping up their unit on Linear Relationships and Slope. They will study Tuesday and Wednesday and then take the end of Unit Assessment on Thursday and Friday.
SCIENCE	Scholars will continue their unit on soil. They will cover the different types or erosion and scholars will then research and present on an extension of their soil material.	Scholars will be finishing up their energy unit. Scholars will be completing a review on Thursday and Friday with their end of Unit Assessment next Monday.	Scholars will continue their Earth unit. They will learn about the layers of the earth and how they cause the movement of tectonics plates.
ENGLISH	Scholars will have a debate on if self-driving cars are good for society. They will work on building background knowledge of a novel’s setting. They will also begin reading their new novel, “Bud Not Buddy”	Scholars will continue their EL unit. This week they will focus on reading informational texts and comparing other multimedia features of the same text	Scholars will continue their unit in which they will learn about the Tringle Shirtwaist Factory fire by reading and analyzing two different novels: one fiction and one non-fiction
SOCIAL STUDIES	Scholars will be starting their research projects on modern day Indian, China, Iraq or Egypt. Scholars will choose which one they wish to research. The purpose of the project is to see how different these countries are now compared to ancient times.	Scholars will continue their studies of their new case study about the Middle Ages. This week they will concentrate on how the Roman Catholic Church was the center of all/most of life in Medieval Europe and how the church influenced the masses. They will have discussions around persevering through adversity	Scholars will be analyzing the hardships of workings and immigrants during the Industrial Revolution. Scholars will then compare the immigrations process during this ere to the modern immigration process
