What Your Child Should Know
Kindergarten today is different from the past. Here’s what your child should be able to do before starting school:
social skills
- Ask for help using words
- Share and take turns
- Use manners
- Express feelings clearly
- Try to solve problems on their own
speaking & LIstening
- Follow 2–3 step directions
- Say first and last name
- Speak in complete sentences
fine motor skills
- Hold a pencil correctly
- Use scissors and glue safely
- Snap, zip, button, and lace clothing
- Open simple snacks
- Stack blocks
reading & writing
- Recognize and write first name (capital first, lowercase letters after)
- Know most letter sounds (focus on lowercase letters first)
- Listen to stories and answer questions
- Practice holding and turning pages in a book
math skills
- Count to 20 without skipping numbers
- Count objects one by one and say the total
- Recognize 2D shapes and explore 3D shapes
- Add and subtract numbers up to 10

- Practice shapes, counting, and simple math
- Encourage problem-solving and fine motor skills (scissors, blocks, zipping)
Practice School Skills
may
- Role-play classroom routines and share or take turns
- Speak in full sentences and express feelings
Independent Practice
june
- Dress, pack, and open snacks independently
- Review counting, shapes, letters, and writing daily
Get Ready
july
- Visit school or attend orientation and meet teachers
- Review routines and celebrate learning progress
Take Action

- Submit enrollment forms and prepare supplies
- Read together and talk about first-day excitement
