What Your Child Should Know

Kindergarten today is different from the past. Here’s what your child should be able to do before starting school:

social skills

  • Ask for help using words
  • Share and take turns
  • Use manners
  • Express feelings clearly
  • Try to solve problems on their own

speaking & LIstening

  • Follow 2–3 step directions
  • Say first and last name
  • Speak in complete sentences

fine motor skills

  • Hold a pencil correctly
  • Use scissors and glue safely
  • Snap, zip, button, and lace clothing
  • Open simple snacks
  • Stack blocks

reading & writing

  • Recognize and write first name (capital first, lowercase letters after)
  • Know most letter sounds (focus on lowercase letters first)
  • Listen to stories and answer questions
  • Practice holding and turning pages in a book

math skills

  • Count to 20 without skipping numbers
  • Count objects one by one and say the total
  • Recognize 2D shapes and explore 3D shapes
  • Add and subtract numbers up to 10
